Why Religion Must Be Taught in School
The value of teaching religion in school: The key aspects
Can you imagine yourself writing an essay in Religion? Or asking your groupmate, «Can I pay someone to do my essay in Religion?». Soon it will be a real thing as this subject is planning to be integrated into a school program. Although public schools may not consider religion as a discipline due to the variety of religions and existence of specialized religious schools, some educators believe that this subject should be integrated into the curriculum and teach about the historical and cultural value of the Bible, encouraging its acceptance as a religious document.
Teaching religion should be differentiated from teaching about it, and sometimes these concepts are mixed up, which creates more difficulties in this question. So should religion be integrated into the curriculum, and what value does it bring?
The need for studying religion in school
Some students might say that they have enough assignments even without studying religion, and in college, it will only distract them from their major. Even though many young people use academic helpers when they cannot cope with their homework or ask someone «Can you write essay for me cheap?», they still have no time for studying and writing essays on religious topics as well. There are also such concerns as:
- Diversity of views
America welcomes people of all religions and beliefs, so there is no single concept of religion. As school seniors and students are super susceptible to any pressure, they shouldn`t feel that their opinion about God is questioned, neglected, or underestimated. Any religious discussion in the classroom may lead to a conflict. This becomes a very sensitive topic when it comes to integration religion in schools as one of the main subjects;
- Majority and minority of religions
When discussing, there should be mentioned not only major religions but all of them. Otherwise, it will not be tolerant even if its representatives are not present in the class. Besides, the information should be accurate in order not to hurt someone`s feelings. Students shouldn`t explain the traditions and peculiarities of their beliefs as it can make them feel uncomfortable and think that their religion is exotic;
- The opinion of atheists
Before integrating religion in schools, educators should think of those who are raised with no particular belief – atheists or agnostics. It becomes another difficulty, as this discipline will be obligatory for everyone.
Despite these reasonable concerns, there is a number of positive aspects of accepting religious education as a part of the school curriculum:
1. It teaches students to be kind
Religion is a positive subject that teaches young people moral and ethical values based on different beliefs. It helps to make them more kind and human and develops the character by positive messages from the Bible;
2. Students should know and respect all religions
Educators believe that young people (not only school seniors and students) should study and understand different religions to make a deliberate and informed decision on what religion to follow. Thus they will be able to build more logical and well-balanced perspective on their faith;
3. It promotes being open-minded and not judge others
One of the difficulties becomes the fact that children, when growing up, are not taught to be open about their faith as for many people, it is a very personal thing. Studying religion in school, they can become more open-minded, learn about other faiths, and avoid misconceptions and prejudice formed in society.
